Notes From The Sylvan Hotel pre-sale events
Sylvan Summer
By Rose Lindsey
At the end of August, the Hinton team celebrated the upcoming release of The Sylvan Hotel at Genesee Park with a blackberry treat event! Coordinated primarily by Hinton intern Badger, this event saw us creating an entire pop-up in Genesee Park, complete with food, refreshments, and live music!
The event’s performers were All Friends Here, a local band with plenty of influence from the 90’s Seattle music scene, which readers of The Sylvan Hotel will recognize as a crucial aspect of the novel. Their concerts have taken them to staple Seattle venues, such as the Central Saloon in Belltown – but for one evening, Hinton Publishing was honored with their acoustic performance. With blankets strewn about across the grass, it really captured the magic of a picnic event in the park. We highly encourage you to keep an eye out for their upcoming shows!
In honor of Frannie James’s blackberry summers, a number of sweet treats were made for the event, including a blackberry lemonade courtesy of Badger, and blackberry crumble courtesy of Hinton’s deputy publisher, Maggie Block. One of our favorite featured desserts was baked by Lulu, from the pop-up bakery Tremonte’s Italian American. Her blackberry cake was a smash hit for everyone in attendance!
Hinton had a number of other stations available for attendants, ranging from a photo booth to an arts and crafts station for folks to make their own bookmarks. We’re most fond of our map station, however. With a design highlighting locations around Seattle that are prominently featured in The Sylvan Hotel, attendants were able to mark on the map with sticky notes, detailing their strongest memories with each area. This acted as a tender way to honor the greater Seattle area. Be sure to stay updated on more pre-release promo for The Sylvan Hotel, as there will be plenty of opportunities for Hinton fans to engage with Seattle in this reminiscent way.
Though our blackberry summer event has passed, our Sylvan Hotel celebrations are just starting up! Join us for our future events, including the launch event at Elliot Bay Book Co., on October 22nd at 7 pm! We can’t wait for the Sylvan to welcome you. In the meantime, thank you to everyone who participated or attended our Genesee Park takeover. It was an absolute joy.
90s Bookish Trivia
By Maggie Block
We had a lot of fun hosting a 90s literary trivia night at Charlie’s Queer Books! Charlie was true delight to collaborate with, and if you haven’t been up to Freemont to check out his aesthetically on point shop, with an expertly curated collection: you are missing out!
The trivia questions were created by the absolute geniuses at Head in the Clouds Trivia! It was a real pleasure to have them incorporate promo materials we made, like the playlist of all the music listed in the book, and the digital map of all the locations in the book into their questions!
It was a fun night, and a good time!
